Most insurances require that you use a generic equivalent when available. If you prefer the brand name you need to tell your doctor to request that the brand be dispensed instead of the generic. There will almost always be a higher co-payment for the brand.
Sometimes your insurance will require a prior authorization in order to pay for the medication the doctor ordered. This requires the doctor to request the prior authorization. The pharmacist can not request it. Sometimes this takes up to a week to get an answer back from the insurance.
Sometimes your insurance will not pay for the medication ordered at all and will require the doctor to prescribe another drug simular to the one ordered, but in the same therapeutic class.
